Serta 10-Inch Gel Memory Foam 3-Layer Mattress review, Queen

Serta 10-Inch Gel Foam 3-Layer Mattress review, Queen

I didn’t intend on purchasing a new mattress since I never had trouble falling asleep before and my ‘old’ mattress was only 3 or 4 years old. But due to a bed bug infestation in my building, I could not salvage my bed. Lying on top of a mattress encasement with tough, crinkling plastic ruined my usually undisturbed nights. Desperate to find a replacement mattress that fit my budget, I hastily ordered this Serta 10-Inch Gel Memory Foam 3-Layer Mattress. For the most part, it’s been okay. (written by Mark Jordan, one of my best friends and neighbors)

Bigger Bed for Less

I bought the Serta gel memory foam mattress in the queen size even though I’m a single guy and am used to a full bed. At around $490, the queen size is $150 cheaper than the full size (check out the price). In fact, it’s the cheapest size, period. I like to spread out when I sleep, so the more area I have, the better.

Heavy Lifting

This mattress is heavier than the one it replaced. This felt close to 100 lbs with the box and packaging. I lift weights on a regular basis, so it didn’t give me any trouble. The delivery guy, however, struggled a bit to unload the box. Since I live on the 9th floor, I met him in the lobby and brought it up myself in the elevator.

Settling In

Maybe I just don’t know my way out of the box, but I found it a lot more difficult getting the mattress out of the box than I did carrying it. When I finally cut away the plastic, I let it unfold and expand for a couple of hours. Memory foam is new to me, but I understand it’s notorious for having a distinct odor. This Serta gel memory foam mattress did not.

Sinking Into a Deep SleepSerta memory foam mattress construction

I had an interesting first night on this mattress. I received it in the dead of winter when my heat was out. Sleeping uncomfortably was never an issue for me, but this mattress felt rock hard that night. I got on it, and it did indeed feel very firm. Almost too hard, like I was lying on the floor. After a couple of minutes, however, my body heat must have softened the foam, and it felt like it molded to my back. There’s no questioning that I slept comfortably, but the next morning, I felt like I had sunk into the bed and struggled to climb out like I was stuck in a bean bag chair. Maybe it’s because I’m a sturdy man weighing at around 260 lbs and I generate a lot of heat, but the mattress’ design could have something to do with it as well. The top 1.5 inch layer contains gel bead memory foam that responds to temperature and cradles the body. That, along with the 1.5 inches of ActivAir foam that displaces body pressure, seems to serve as a duo marshmallow to swallow me up. The remaining 7 inches of high density foam provides support, which I believe is the only thing preventing me from completely sinking into the bed.

Built to Last…Until It Breaks

I’ve had this Gel memory foam mattress for a year now, and some parts of it droop. There might’ve been a missed stitch when I first got it, because it appears to be coming undone, and there’s a big opening at the seam. The good news is that it comes with a 20 year warranty.

Serta comfortable gel memory foam mattressPros:

  • Low price for a larger size
  • No odor
  • 20-year warranty

Cons:

  • Heavier than spring mattresses
  • Very firm when room temperature is cold
  • Sinks if you’re heavy and run hot
  • Not durable

Overall, this Serta gel memory foam mattress makes a decent replacement for my old mattress. I dislike the sinking feeling, but I sleep fine every night. I have no issue with the comfort level and will keep this mattress for as long as it lasts.
