Having only recently purchased a great memory foam mattress topper, I was finally content with sleeping on the spring mattress in my dorm. But with the start of the new term, I decided to commute from home to save money. Unfortunately, my parents gave my old mattress away, and I wasn’t prepared to sleep on an air bed for the next several months, so I needed to find the most comfortable mattress available at the lowest possible price. Spoiled by my awesome foam topper, I had high expectations for what I wanted in a new mattress.
Decent mattress at a cheap price – YES
Since I moved back home in the hopes of saving money, I wasn’t about to clean out my savings on a new mattress, but I also didn’t want to sacrifice on comfort. I love memory foam, but the majority of the memory foam mattresses available have a starting cost well over $500, with some valued at over $4000. Finally, I found the Sleep Master 8 Inch Pressure Relief Memory Foam Mattress from Sleep Master. I snagged a twin size at only $150, and the larger sizes are just a little over $200.
Easy to transport – YES
Recalling the last time we had a mattress delivered, I was concerned with the difficulty of maneuvering such a cumbersome object through the house and into my bedroom, but this delivery was stress-free. Since this is a foam mattress, it arrived rolled up in a box. All I had to do was take it out and give it time to expand.
Safe to sleep on – YES
This mattress is CertiPUR-US certified, which basically means it’s safe from harmful chemicals – which means I can sleep well without having to worry.
No funny smell – NO
I’ve had products like this before that had that distinct chemical odor. The smell from this mattress isn’t the worst I’ve experienced, but the product description boasts Evergreen and ActivCharcoal features that neutralize and minimize odors. The smell did go away after a day or two, but the fact there even was one made me wonder about false advertising.
I enjoy a resilient mattress, but require a bit of firmness to support my back. This mattress is made up of 8 inches of foam, which seems like an excessive amount compared to my old 3 inch foam topper, but each layer of foam apparently has its own purpose. The first 2 inches are supposed to cradle your body, the next 2 inches relieve pain, and the 4-inch bottom layer gives support. I can’t really tell if all the layers do as described, and I wouldn’t say that this is the most comfortable mattress on the market. It’s definitely firmer than my mattress topper and takes a little getting used to.
Built for the future -???
The mattress is made with Bio Foam, a new type of durable and fungus-resistant material. It seems solid and upon inspection, I couldn’t find any rips. Still, I’ve only had this mattress for about a month so I can’t really tell how long it’ll last.
- Cheap – totally wasn’t expecting to get a memory foam mattress for less than $200
- Rolls up for easy transport in case I need to find my own place
- No harmful chemicals and safe to sleep on
- The removable polyester jacquard cover zips off so it can be conveniently washed
- Smells funny despite odor neutralizers
- Firmer than I expected from a foam mattress
While I’m positive there are better mattresses out there, I must admit this is the most comfortable mattress I’ve ever owned. This is a great choice for people looking for a high quality memory foam mattress at a cheap price.
